Dead men tell no tales.

((Hello hun ^_^ Of course!
Keep in mind that this is -my- unpopular opinion of Grell’s gender and sexuality. It is also my opinion on -my Grell-. So there is a 95% chance that others either won’t understand, won’t agree with me, and just want something to argue over. (It’s happened before).
Disclaimer: Since I am posting this ask reply publicly - If others don’t agree with me, that’s perfectly fine, they don’t have to. Others are more than welcome to form their own opinions, just as I can form mine. If anyone doesn’t agree with me and want to bitch about it, please do so in a post of your own, not in a reblog of this post; because I just don’t give a damn about others complaints, and am not looking for a debate! :) - However if you want to reblog it, you are more than welcome to! Just know, I am not looking for a fight, since this seems to be a sensitive subject for a lot of people.
- Grell’s Sexuality:
Grell is gay, with bisexual capabilities. He definitely prefers the romantic company of men, but just not any man will do. Being quite a vain creature, Grell demands that his lovers are handsome, good looking. But also, as much as Grell is entirely capable of taking care of himself, he likes to play the ‘damsel in distress’, because it makes him feel wanted. It is absolutely vital that the men Grell goes after are capable of either defeating him, or matching his skills in combat. Think about the men he has fawned over; each of them either has, or has the capability of besting him. He doesn’t want a weakling. He wants a storybook romance; a strong handsome man that can take him into their arms, sweep him off his feet, and carry him away in to that proverbial sunset. That being said: Is Grell dominant or submissive? Most people seem to see him as sub; However it is my opinion that he is both and neither. Grell is what is known as a Switch. He is entirely capable of either being a dominant lover, or a submissive lover, depending on his mood and the situation.
In one of Yana’s early preliminary character sketches of Grell, she makes notes on the sketch that refer to Grell as an S-man. S-man is gay slang in Japan that means the top in a male/male relationship; or a tough, sadistic or mean top in a gay couple. He definitely acts this way in his OVA with William; until Will steps up and defeats him; and he gets all hot and bothered by it *laughs* I think that is when he decides it might not be such a bad thing to experience love from the other side of the relationship spectrum as well.
As far as Grell’s bisexuality goes; I do not believe that his relationship with Madame Red was purely platonic. I do believe they were lovers. He felt a connection with her. He wouldn’t form a romantic relationship with just any woman. His Madame was beautiful, strong, daring, bold, and intelligent. She wasn’t the sort to let anyone walk all over her, she could take care of herself, and she carried similar emotional wounds that Grell did. He was testing the waters with that relationship. Grell is entirely capable of finding women attractive, seeing their beauty; but as a general rule he would rather go shopping for shoes and hats with them, than be in a romantic relationship with a woman. He prefers being the feminine one in the relationship.
- Grell’s Gender:
Grell is physically male. He is not transsexual, or transgender. (now before everyone freaks out, wait to read why I view him this way).
He does not live, or act entirely as a M to F trans person does. I am not saying this from an ‘outsider’ standpoint. I have friends and family that are M to F, and F to M; I have a close relationship with these aspects and mannerisms. And also because of my own personal gender identity.
However, I am not in any way saying that he isn’t feminine, and doesn’t have a feminine mentality. Grell himself in manga and anime will drift back and forth between masculine and feminine self-gender pronouns. As an example, in the ship arc he refers to both himself and Ronald as boys, when just before that he was using ‘her’ and ‘actress’ to speak of himself. Even Yana Toboso herself refers to Grell as ‘he’.
In the ‘Kuroshitsuji Character Guide Artbook’ Yana Toboso wrote an interview with Grell, from Grell’s voice. He does state in this interview that he wants to have a sex-change to become female. The reason I think this was written is because of the culture Yana comes from, and the popular views on homosexuality in Japan. One has to consider the source of the author’s inspiration. In Grell’s original Japanese text he uses a form of speaking called Onee-kotaba, it means ‘Big-sister speech’. It is a stereotypical way for feminine gay males in Japan to speak; with feminine personal pronouns included. It is sort of how in the U.S. it is stereotypical for gay men to speak with a lisp, and call one another ‘girlfriend’. In Japan it is a common belief that -all- feminine gay males, and male cross-dressers act that way because they wish to become women. It isn’t true from the gay-male standpoint, but it is a common view of the culture regardless.
So from Yana’s point-of-view, of writing for a gay male, it is logical that she would have Grell come to that conclusion; it being a popular outlook of the gay culture in the area that she lives.
I don’t believe that Grell considers himself to be entirely male, but he doesn’t consider himself entirely female either. He knows he is physically male, but he very much embraces and enjoys his own personal femininity and freedom of expression there-in. Grell is very much a Lady, and enjoys being treated as such. He considers it very flattering and complimentary if others see that femininity in him as well, enough to call him a Lady, or use feminine pronouns with him. He sees women as creatures of great beauty, something that is empowering, and he wants to emulate that. I think he considers himself to be sort of the grey area on gender; both, and neither. Sexually androgynous. Some days he feels considerably more feminine and wants to be treated as such, and some days it might be the other way around. In the Ciel In Wonderland Part 2 OVA Grell himself states in Japanese: “I am already constrained, because I am a halfway existence, that doesn’t know if it is a man or a woman.” In English he says “I am a creature of halves and in-betweens. Am I male or female? Naughty or nice? No one can say.” Because of society’s ‘gender rules’ he struggles with who he is, trying to be understood. But he has learned to love himself for who he is, for the range of genders he is capable of portraying. He sees the beauty in the masculine as well as the feminine. And just wants to be loved and accepted as such.
That’s my two cents on Grell’s sexuality and gender. I hope it wasn’t too confusing. :) ))

Anonymous said: Hi there. I mean no offense to you but I don't really like what you said of Grell's sexuality and such. I just want to get out there that Grell is firstly Bisexual (as written my Yana Toboso herself) and recognizes herself as female, so it is manners to address her as female.
(( You don’t have to agree with me, or like what I said. Just as I don’t have to agree with you or like what you say :)
Though, Yana -does- speak of Grell as ‘he’.
Aside from doing it in numerous places on her blogs. She also does so in her sketch notes on Grell’s character designs.
A few examples:
Cheshire Grell Character Design Page: “Grell as the Cheshire Cat. A role well suited to him.”
Butler Grell Character Design Page : “Red ribbon. He finds it fashionable.”
Young Grell Character Design Page: “Grell’s ‘moody’ expressions. Grell was much more brooding here because he was young.”, “He is much manlier than he is now, and more of an S-Man.”, “His hair sort of has a ‘will’ feeling to it.”, “He’s very fashionable! Wing-Tip shoes.” ))
IT’S ALMOST FALL U KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS VIDEO THE OTHER DAY THANKS
